Wordpress Ask me 1.0 alpha plugin released
January 1st, 2007 by morning
We finally made it. So, what it is all about. If you have visited my “About” page, you probably noticed that it is not an ordinary page. It gives visitors an opportunity to ask blog owner a question and see all questions from other visitors. The idea and initial plugin came from my dear friend Sara who wrote it for her personal use. Once I started this blog, I talked her into giving me the script so I can have different About page. After some talking we decided to extend it a little bit and made it public for all people who are willing to have similar About page as we do, but are not able to write code themselves. This turned into hours of hard work and finally, you can see results of it.
So, here it is, first alpha release is now available for you to use it. However, I presume there are some bugs that we are still not aware of, but we do promise we’ll keep this plugin evolve and become better.
Plugin should work on both Wordpress 1.5 and 2.0 versions, however there are some requirements for it to run on your blog. Exec-PHP plugin is required. You can download it here. Please make sure you activated it and configured it properly. Some other requirements are:
a. Disable the WYSIWYG rich editor within the user options (at the bottom of the page)
b. Disable “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”
Make sure your permalink structure is name based rather than using the post id.
Here are the installation instructions:
1. Download plugin from here
2. Extract archive (you should see 2 files (askme.php and ask-me-readme.txt) on your local drive
3. Upload askme.php into your Wordpress plugin directory
4. Go to your admin control panel and activate the plugin.
Plugin should create a page “Ask me” for you which should be ready for usage. Under the Options/Ask me, you will find few settings you can configure by yourself.
I strongly suggest that you read ask-me-readme.txt
Give it a try, and leave us some feedback. We have more ideas for extending this plugin, but for now, we are hoping to fix all possible bugs we still haven’t discovered, but which might be present.
Happy New Year, people! This is our gift for all of you.

Great idea, if you ask me.
It would be great if this had some sort of captcha system or worked in conjunction with akismet. Still great though
That’s one of the items on our to do list, to make it work with akismet
Hello!
As I already told Sara in her blog, a pal of mine and me have modified the aske me plugin so that it works with WP 2.1. Just wanted to give you report about that, cause it is your plugin and you two should know it. ;) If you’d like to see it, got to my page. I hope thats okay, of course we did not change the author informations.
Also I translated your great plugin into german and made it available for Download on my page. Its the only ask me plugin existing, I think, so it is very popular. ;)
greetz, Angi
Thanks Angi!
We both, Sara and me are too busy in last two months, and weren’t able to work on new release, but I’m hoping that will change soon!
Thanks for helping us.
Hello!
No problem
was fun to me.
But another question: Where did you get these cute smilies from? They’re so sweet
greetz, Angi
Oh, some of them were part of the smilie plugin I installed. You can find more info here: Wordpress Plugins I Use Rest of the smilies I added myself. They are all yahoo messenger smilies, but you are free to take mine
Cool
Thank you! I didn’t know that the yahoo messi has such cuddly smilies
*starting to store all smilies*

[…] 4. I see that you’ve contributed a plugin to the WP community (about me plugin), tell me more.. […]
Interesting. I wanna try this out.
Unfortunately this plugin doesn’t work with PHP5. It gives a Fatal error in Options > Ask me.
When using PHP4 on a test server, it works ok.
Any ideas?
Hm, interesting. Both Sara and I have blogs on servers with php5 and it works for us. It might be due to some php settings, but I cannot say for sure.
Angi has the same problem… Also PHP5…

Thanks A LOT ofr this plugin!

I searched everywhere but none were compatible w/ wordpress 2.0
I love posts like this! Keep up the great blog, I’ve bookmarked it and added it to my RSS reader to check out more often.
Any luck with Captcha for this wonderful little plugin?
I can’t even open the zip file ? a zip file should be easy to open but this one is dead in the water any suggestions ?
@S: yes, it is on a to-do list to add some kind of spam protection. Soon, I hope!
@alias: That’s weird, I opened it up just fine. Can you try it again?
Hi i need the tag to put on my wordpress ask-me page, cuz i edited it and the code has gone, and i cant find it anywhere, ist that ok?
Do you have the old code that shows how many questions was holding for an answer? Cuz thats gone to :s
thank you
Hi - thanks for the plugin, I searched and searched for it and eventually have got it working! Its exactly what I need except for one thing - my site is quite serious so I can’t have comments like “Name is clueless about…” I’ve changed the phrase_ID values in the PHP, but they are still coming up.
I’ve tried reinstalling, deactivating, etc etc - but no luck. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated!
Thank you!
I have tried to download this plugin multiple times and I always get a corrupted file error. I would really love to use this plugin. I would appreciate any help you can give.
Nevermind! I extracted it with WinRAR and it worked just fine. Sorry to bother you.
Have something to say?
